Microneedling

Microneedling is one of the most popular and versatile skin rejuvenation treatments available. It’s a minimally invasive treatment that effectively addresses conditions ranging from acne scars to wrinkles and sun damage. We offer microneedling at our Anchorage, AK, practice using SkinPen®, the first microneedling device in the U.S. to be cleared by the FDA.

Women and men come who want smoother, firmer-looking skin with SkinPen microneedling come to Plastic Surgeons of Alaska from Wasilla, Palmer, and other Mat-Su Valley communities.

Choosing the Best Microneedling Provider & Med Spa

While aesthetic nurses typically administer microneedling treatments, a top medical spa is usually overseen by a highly qualified medical director for consultation or in the event of an emergency. Ideally, the medical director should be a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist with a background in aesthetic medicine and knowledge of a wide variety of nonsurgical treatments.

At Plastic Surgeons of Alaska, aesthetic pro Cydney Brown, RN prioritizes your care and results, working under the supervision of a board-certified plastic surgeon. In fact, we have the distinction of being the only medical spa in Anchorage, Mat-Su Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula with board-certified plastic surgeons on staff to ensure your safety during microneedling and other aesthetic treatments.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling gently penetrates the skin’s surface with tiny needles on the tip of the SkinPen device. This creates microchannels in the skin that stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing response while limiting damage to skin cells. As the skin heals, it produces new collagen and other growth factors essential for smoother, tighter skin. You can think of it as rejuvenating the skin from the inside out. The microchannels created during the procedure also help the skin efficiently absorb serums and other skincare products that enhance results.

What Can Microneedling Treat?

We recommend scheduling a series of at least 3 treatments for optimal results. Microneedling can help with issues like:

  • Hair loss (also called alopecia)
  • Dark spots or patches on your skin (hyperpigmentation)
  • Large pores
  • Skin laxity
  • Stretch marks

Microneedling is highly effective for addressing the signs of aging; however, people with more significant facial skin laxity may achieve more dramatic skin tightening with a surgical facelift.

Enhancing Your Microneedling Results

The tiny channels created during microneedling treatments help the skin more efficiently absorb nourishing serums. Using the right serum after microneedling is crucial to enhance the healing process and improve your results. The best serums to use after microneedling include:

Vitamin C serums: This potent antioxidant can protect the skin from free radical damage and stimulate collagen production, improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) serums: When combined with microneedling, HA serums improve skin moisture, shrink pores, and reduce skin roughness and scaliness. (HA is also the active ingredient in most dermal fillers and many medical-grade skincare products.)

Growth factor serums: These serums contain proteins that can enhance collagen production and accelerate healing.

We offer several medical-grade skincare product lines with serums you can incorporate into your daily regimen.

What Is Recovery After Microneedling Like?

After the treatment, it is normal to experience some mild side effects and a brief recovery period. Here’s what you can expect:

Redness and Sensitivity: Immediately after the treatment, you may notice redness and sensitivity in the treated area. Redness is a normal response to the micro-injuries created by the microneedles. The intensity and duration of redness can vary from person to person, but it typically subsides within a few days.

Swelling: Some individuals may experience mild swelling, particularly around the eyes or in areas with thinner skin. This is temporary and usually resolves within a few days.

Dryness and Flaking: As the skin heals, you might notice some dryness, tightness, or flaking. This is a normal part of the healing process and ordinarily resolves within a week.

Skin Sensation: You may experience temporary changes in skin sensation, such as tingling or a mild itching sensation. These sensations diminish as the skin heals.

Your aesthetic treatment provider will advise you on post-treatment care and address any concerns or questions.

Microneedling FAQ

Can new dark spots appear after microneedling?

Because microneedling works by making hundreds of controlled micro-injuries on the surface of the skin, some patients may notice small dark spots appearing after their procedure. Breakouts may also occur. As the skin heals and recovers, any marks will gradually fade away, revealing smoother, more even-toned skin.

How many microneedling sessions are needed for optimal results?

This depends on your unique symptoms, skin condition, and desired results. Most patients need 3 to 6 treatment sessions spaced about a month apart to achieve optimal results.

Are results permanent?

Microneedling results are not permanent. As your body loses collagen, your results will gradually fade. Many patients are able to go 6 months to a year between maintenance treatments, but the longevity of your microneedling results depends on factors such as your age, skin condition, and how well you take care of your skin.

How long after treatment can I wear makeup or get a facial?

We recommend refraining from wearing makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours following microneedling to give your skin time to “reset” and heal. It’s also a good idea to wait 2 to 4 weeks before getting a facial.

Does microneedling really help fade scars?

Yes, microneedling stimulates collagen production to help treat and fade scars, including acne scars.
