The first step in choosing skincare products is to understand your skin type. There are 4 basic skin types, and knowing which one you have is essential for selecting the best options to restore and optimize healthy-looking skin.

The 4 skin types are:

• Normal: This term refers to skin that’s neither too oily nor dry.
• Oily: Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum to help protect the skin, but too much creates oily skin.
• Dry: Too little sebum leads to dry skin, which doesn’t retain moisture and lacks the skin’s protective shield. Dry skin treatment in the winter is especially important in Alaska.
• Combination: Some people have oily skin on their foreheads, nose, and chin, while their cheeks have dry skin.
